Shepherd’s Pie with Ground Beef (Cottage Pie); Gluten free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free, Recipe

Shepherds Pie

Allergy friendly comfort foods can be hard to find. I hate to say it but I think even harder to find in America. Why? Well, for me personally, many of my "comfort foods" growing up incorporated a  "cream of something" soup. You don't find that in Italian comfort food, or French comfort food, or Mexican comfort food. It's winter, it's cold, and I want MORE comfort food! Because of that, I'm reaching out to other countries and learning how I can modify their comfort food recipes for myself. Which … [Read more...]

Allergy Friendly Homemade Mashed Potatoes; Gluten Free, Soy Free, Nut Free, Dairy Free Option Recipe

Dairy Free Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes....yum. I think I was gluten free, dairy free, and soy free for 2 or 3 years before I decided to make myself some homemade mashed potatoes.  Why? For some reason I thought they were a pain to make because my step mom always made them for the holidays and complained about how time consuming it was.  What!? They're super easy! I have no idea what she was talking about because these also aren't time consuming at all! Maybe now because I cook allergy friendly I'm used to making … [Read more...]

Braised Red Cabbage; Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Side Dish Recipe

IMG_20151122_151932

Years ago when I was visiting Chicago, probably like 2 years before I moved there (and years before I changed my diet) I went to a restaurant on Michigan Ave called Bandero. The food was good, not Michelin star or anything but but higher quality than most.  Oddly, years later I would work less than a block away at the newspaper there.  Years later, when I moved to Chicago, I walked past the restaurant and remembered the delicious sweet braised red cabbage, topped with goat cheese, that I had … [Read more...]

Apple and Celery Root Puree; Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Recipe

IMG_20151122_153351

Do you like celery root? I LOVE it but oddly, I never ate it until a few years ago.  Now we eat it all the time.  This is one of my favorite side dish recipes. I started making it a few years ago when my husband decided to go primarily nightshade free (although he still eats tomatoes and peppers occassionally - apparently potatoes effect his joints the most). We were looking for a "mashed potato" substitute that was not only nightshade free, but also gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and nut … [Read more...]

Parsnip and Celery Root Puree; gluten free, optional dairy free, soy free, nut free, egg free, nightshade free side dish recipe

IMG_20151124_172325

Whenever we go to a nice restaurant around harvest time it seems like every meat is accompanied by a root vegetable puree. I love the apple and celery root puree I modified from Ina Garten’s recipe here, but it’s a bit too sweet to pair with some dishes so I decided to combine my celery root with another underused in my kitchen vegetable – parsnips! I chose the combination simply because I had them left in my refrigerator prior to leaving for vacation (we actually packed them all up and brought … [Read more...]

Homemade Gluten Free Chicken Noodle Soup

Chicken Noodle Soup 6

So,  I'm down in Key West, sitting on the porch of a 95 year old hotel, hair and makeup done for a wedding I'm attending later, listening to the rain, breathing in the ocean air feeling TOTALLY relaxed while the little one is taking a nap with dad in the room. I just got word that it's snowing in Michigan - actually, the pictures look like it's been snowing for a while. This soup is the last thing from my mind right now but I figured I would post it for those of you cozying up by the fire for … [Read more...]

Beet and Butternut Squash Harvest Salad; Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Recipe

Beet and Butternut Harvest Salad (8)

I just ate this for lunch and as a side with dinner four days in a row....yes four! It's that good! Well, that and I seem to be the only one who will eat butternut squash at the moment - and butternut squash are big. I'm not sure why but my LO loves it one night and won't touch it the next.  I'm pretty sure it's common at his age. Anyways, we're heading out to Florida in a week (super excited) so I'm trying to use up what we have in the house instead of grocery shopping, think butternut squash, … [Read more...]

Crock Pot Rootbeer BBQ Pulled Chicken; Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Recipe

Crock Pot Rootbeer BBQ Pulled Chicken

As usual I'm playing catch up and I'm still trying to finish up all of the posts surrounding my son's second birthday party.  I cooked everything from scratch (with help from my mom and step mom) and happily, everyone complimented me on both the party itself and all of the food (which was really awesome because although I planned the meal, I was winging the recipes - some I had made before but didn't write down, like this one, and some I completely made up)! We eat gluten free, dairy free, soy … [Read more...]

Soy Free Stir Fry, Bok Choy, Broccoli and Chicken; Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Recipe

Soy Free Chicken Boy Choy Stir Fry

First harvest of the season! It's always so exciting to start reeping the rewards of all of you hard work all spring! My garden was going strong and then, overnight all of my brassicas started to wilt :(. I was so bummed, especially to see 3 heads of bok choy so wilted they had to be pulled. I figured out the cause (read about it here) and it was spreading so I decided to harvest the 6 heads of baby bok choy that were still looking perfect, then I had to decide how to use them. This was also a … [Read more...]
