My Harvest So Far – My Organic Garden Update

August 5, 2013 by Kristina Leave a Comment

So, I was going to post a new recipe today but to be quite honest, I’m not cooking because I’m busy :).  I decided instead that I would show give you an update on my garden/jungle.  Yes, it’s pretty much a jungle.  I’ve harvested a TON of cherry tomatoes in the last 2 weeks and they are AMAZING! Five of these bad boys to be exact!

My neighbors seem to think I went a bit overboard with the tomato plants.  I planted 16 of them in a pretty small space (1 per square foot) and then used tomato ladders (you can buy them at www.gardeners.com) to prop them up. I can’t even imagine what these bad boys would look like without them – they’re starting to block the view out of our front windows.

Surprisingly, I haven’t harvested that much of anything else yet this year.  All I can think is that the winter frosts hung around a few weeks longer than normal and I procrastinated a few weeks on getting seedlings into the ground.  I’m hoping everything will really start going in the next week (and hopefully we’ll have a long summer so the garden actually pays off).  I did get my first 2 pints of Parisian Pickling Cucumbers (the first few are always misshapen and weird) and 1 normal cucumber.

It looks like I should have some yellow squash, more cucs, and some red peppers in a few days.  I’m sure in a few weeks I’ll be packing cucumbers for me and my husband for lunch and cooking zuchinni and/or yellow squash every night for dinner (yes, I always plant WAY too many).

It’s cold and rainy in Michigan today and I’m wishing I had some homemade chicken broth ready for a soup like this one. This soup is naturally gluten free, dairy free, soy free, nut free, egg free and can be easily made vegan. It also could easily be made nightshade free with the elimination of…
