SOY FREE CHINESE FOOD? Is that possible? Here’s a start – Homemade Teriyaki Sauce that’s Gluten and Soy Free!
One type of food I’ve missed A TON since going gluten and soy free back in May is Chinese! The hubby and I used to LOVE going to a locally owned hibachi grill on occassion. I ate the sh*t out of their ginger dressing and ginger sauce, the hubby loves their steak teriyaki with scallions – mainly, he loves their teriyaki sauce. They sell it there…. for $16 a pint (which I realized after the additional $32 on my bill when he decided to order 2) but of course it has soy. As does essentially everything.
Believe me, no matter what kind of delicious recipes I can come up with – I’ll still miss the ease of being able to swing into the take out place on the corner, or have it delivered in 20 minutes. I’m sure you know already, when you’re gluten free, dairy free, and soy free, there’s no way around having to make some things from scratch. This recipe is easy enough – Perhaps the most fabulous thing about this sauce is – ONLY 6 INGREDIENTS and it tastes exactly the same as the real thing (or at least as much as I can remember). So here it is….

Homemade Teriyaki Sauce Recipe – Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Nut Free Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups water
- Update: 10/31/17 - This recipe used to call for 3/4 cup of brown sugar - after cooking without added sugar for 4 years it's way too sweet for us now so it has been updated to...
- 1/2 cup Coconut Sugar (we use Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Coconut Palm Sugar or the Simply Truth brand they just started stocking at our grocery store)
- 1 tsp Organic Garlic
- 1/2 cup Organic Garlic (I always buy in bulk)
- 3 tbsp Corn Starch ( we use Let's Do...Organic Organic Cornstarch)
- 1 tsp toasted sesame oil (be sure that there's no risk of cross contamination with nuts)
Instructions
- Place all six ingredients into a sauce pan and heat over medium high heat. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly and then reduce to a simmer until thickened. Serve over chicken, salmon, or beef!
This tastes great on a lot of things, mour favorite (which I haven’t made in awhile is teriyaki beef with green onions. ** My Whole Foods started carrying Coconut Aminos a few months ago. It was originally in the “raw” section and was recently moved to the same section as the soy sauce. I use a TON of it for cooking so I’ve now decided to buy in online in a larger package (see below)
